A foreword by Alex Cox and an introduction from Sir Christopher
Frayling speak volumes about the cult status achieved by Night
of The Demon (US Title: Curse of The Demon (1957);
the subject of film critic and broadcaster Tony Earnshaw’s
book Beating the Devil – The Making of Night of the
Demon. What could have been just another hokey B movie
has grown in reputation, aided and abetted by the controversy and
conflicting stories about its production.
Night of the Demon was directed almost 50 years ago by
Jacques Tourneur – the auteur behind the classic atmospheric
thrillers Cat People and I Walked With A Zombie
– and starred Dana Andrews, Peggy Cummins and Niall MacGinnis.
The film’s troublesome production schedule is brought vividly
to life through Earnshaw’s enthusiastic style – including
new research and original interviews.
The wider cast includes a brash American producer, a difficult director,
a slighted script-writer, a blacklisted rewrite man and the behind
the scenes special effects wizards who went on to create the iconic
and much disputed monster, later disowned by Tourneur.
Earnshaw’s book tracks the film’s development from the
original ghost story Casting the Runes by M R James through
the various shooting scripts, alternative titles, and the challenging
production work, to the final theatrical release.
Along the way there are anecdotes, analysis and fascinating insights
into British movie making in the 1950s, as well as previously unseen
production designs by Sir Ken Adam, who went on to create the gadgets
and secret bases that helped make the Bond series an international
phenomenon.
With a comprehensive location guide and biographies of all the onstage
and backstage players, Beating The Devil – the Making
of Night of the Demon is the definitive book on what has
been described as “The Casablanca of Horror Films”.
Beating the Devil is the first in a series of books
to be published by Tomahawk Press in collaboration with the National
Museum of Photography, Film & Television.
